At What Cost?
At What Cost?
Luke 12:20-21
“But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Somewhere along the way, it’s easy to start believing that more will bring happiness. More success, more money, more recognition, just more.
The idea creeps in that reaching the next level, the next paycheck, or the next accomplishment will finally bring satisfaction. At least, that’s what we tell ourselves.
But the problem with more is that it’s never enough. Every goal that is reached is quickly replaced with another. Every answered prayer can easily be overlooked in the pursuit of something greater. The chase continues, the striving never stops, and the idea of building a life that matters begins to get out of focus.
Then one day, a simple but pressing question arises: At what cost?
What are you giving up in your quest for More?
What has been sacrificed in the endless pursuit? How many moments with loved ones have been missed in the effort to get ahead? How many times has time with God been neglected because He was pushed aside because you couldn’t find the time to slow down?
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle, to justify it by saying it’s just “working hard” or “building a future.” But Jesus’ words in Luke 12:20-21 serve as a reminder that no amount of wealth or success will matter if you are Spiritually bankrupt.
If life were to end tonight, what would there be to show for it? Would there be a long list of achievements but an empty heart? A house full of things but a life void of purpose?
How Much Is Enough? The truth is, there will never be “enough” if the wrong things are being chased. Money will never satisfy the soul. Accomplishments will never replace real joy. No trophy, title, or possession will bring the peace that only God can give.
So, the real question is, what is truly valued in life? What are you really trying to build?
Is the focus on storing up treasures on earth, where they will eventually fade away or be occupied by someone else? Or is there an investment in things that last, like Faith, Family, and a Relationship with God?
What Really Matters to you? No one wants to look back one day and realize life was spent chasing things that never mattered. No one wants to trade moments of laughter with loved ones for hours of stress over things that won’t last. No one wants to stand before God and realize that while they were rich in earthly success, they were poor in what truly matters.
Instead, your life should reflect what you truly believe. Seeking God first, trusting that He will provide what is needed, and spending more time with the people who matter should be the priority. Treasures should be laid up in Heaven, knowing that what is invested in God’s kingdom will never be wasted.
Because at the end of the day, nothing from this world will be taken beyond it. But faith, love for God, and the impact you made on others, that will last.
So today is the day to stop chasing what can never satisfy. Today is the day to trust that God is enough and to start investing in what truly matters.
So we begin with the question “At what cost?” The soul is too valuable. Faith is too important. And time is too precious to waste on things that won’t last.
Lord, help us to live for You, not for the things of this world. Help us to seek Your kingdom first, knowing that everything else will fall into place. Let us be rich toward You, storing up treasures that will never fade.
Because in the end, You are the only one we will ever need More of.
